An Enemy Of The People

Following on from the highly commended presentation of “An Inspector Calls”, Everyman returns to the Hawk’s Well with its latest production, the Arthur Miller adaptation of “An Enemy of the People.” This is a white knuckled thriller that guarantees an absorbing night’s entertainment. The plot has many parallels with the Ireland we live in today. The central character is a whistleblower who tries to do the right thing and makes the awful discovery that in his home town money is the root of all truth.  He finds out that the town’s spa on which the local economy largely depends, has become toxic and when he brings this news to the notice of the general public it soon becomes apparent to him that outing one’s colleagues’ incompetence is very dangerous indeed. He becomes embroiled in a bitter battle with the local Mayor who happens to be his own brother and finding out at a public meeting who wins the hearts and minds of the town’s people brings the play to a searing climax. A play not to be missed. Directed by Manus Shields
